Most PocketHHT sessions start with an online connecton to a field device. This is achieved through the Device >> Scan menu. Connections via a local serial connection or remote fieldgate are possible, with previous scan saved for quick start next time around. Selecting a device starts an online session.

Scanning for Devices on a HART Bus
Once a connection has been made the user is presented with a tree view of the device's functionl groups (HART menus). Selecting a functional group displays the list of functionality for that group (a list view). In addition, the header display shows a constantly updating view of the device's dynamic variables. Which dynamic variables are displayed is selectable via a context menu.

To update a variable on the device is as simple as 'click and select' (in the case of a selection list) or 'click and type' for alpha-numeric data. At any time, changes to a device variable may be reverted (rolled back) before they are committed to the device itself.

Once updated, and the user is satisfied with the values to be written, updated variables may be committed to the device. The changes will now be applied and all dependencies with related variables will be actioned.

PocketHHT provides support for all HART field devices via a library of small-footprint device descriptors derived from those published by the HCF.
When connected to the internet, PocketHHT automatically keeps itself synchronised with the current set of device descriptors from the Open Field Communications Online DD Server. Once received, these new descriptors are immediately available for use with devices.
